The wInners

On a warm Friday (2nd July) evening 11 teams from the District gathered for the annual 5 A-side tournament at Concord. Split into two groups they played a number of matches to see which four teams would reach the semi finals. There were both girls and boys playing and the standard of play ranged from German efficiency to England's hit and hope. Although the goalkeeping was often of a far better standard and the teams found the net more often then the combined multi million pound strike force of Heskey and Rooney!! Goal line technology was not required either as the referees had both been to Specsavers before hand!!! (Well at least one had!!! More of that later!!)

After 25 group games the four teams progressed to the Semi Finals where the 32nd played the 231st A and the 76th played the 25th. The 32nd (along with 1 from the 82nd) overcame their opponents in normal time whilst the 76th required a penalty shootout. So we had our finalists in the 76th and the 32nd!!! But wait controversy and a vehement protest from the 33rd. How could they be out? We've not lost a game!!

The tournament was put on hold, the scores were rechecked and still they had not qualified more protests. Another recheck and relaying the scores to them and mistake found a 2-0 victory wrongly recorded by the ref as a 2-0 defeat. Check with opponents who confirmed lost game. Wrong team in semi and a ref left rather embarrassed. I won't name him as to avoid severe repercussions!! What to do now???

Organiser off to see 32nd explain they have to replay their semi as wrong team put through. Decision accepted without complaint and they go on to beat the 33rd to reach the final again.

They played the 76th in the final and overcome them to win the trophy. They were also presented with the award for the "Most Scout Like Attitude" for the way in which they just accepted it and got on with it. Well done boys!!!

Beckford Peg Winners

Congratulations go to the 82nd Chapeltown Scouts for their fantastic achievement of winning the Beckford Peg for the fifth year running. If it was a football trophy they'd now get to keep it for good.

The day of the Beckford Peg arrived with a cool grey start for the first team off at 8.10am from Hood Hill. 14 scout teams and 3 explorer/young leader teams from all over the district were entered into the competition. This year the walk would take them from Hood Hill through Wentworth eventually ending up at the Rotherham Young Millers ground at Kimberworth. On the way they would negotiate 10 check points with 10 different incidents (although it was noted, by one group, that string seemed to be a common theme).

Naviagtion this year seemed to really good apart from a couple of groups who ventured too far away from the route, although they all managed to find the bases they required. One particular section that seemed to catch them out was the router between 7 & 8, the reason being that the map didn't really relate to the paths now in the wood.

The chance to eat a chip buttie and have a drink seemed to inspire the groups on to make the finish.

Thanks to all the leaders and helpers who manned the checkpoints on a really cold day to ensure that the Beckford Peg is one of the best events on the calendar.

Full Results are here

At the same time 2 explorer teams and a Young Leader team from the 33rd were fighting it out for the Spike Johnson Trophy. The winners were eventually the 33rd Young Leaders.

St Georges Day Night Hike

This year’s hike was from the 25th HQ in Ecclesfield and finishing up at the 82nd HQ in Chapeltown with 7 tasks to do on route, oh and a small chair to carry round with them, although some kids did think we were joking when we said that to them!! As if we would do that!!
21 teams set off with the last team leaving at about 8pm and were set various tasks, starting with Andy and Sylvia at checkpoint 1 who had a number of different chairs for them to identify!! Can’t think why they chose that task!!
On to the Explorers on checkpoints 3 and 4 and to Mike Liddell who had a task for them to do at checkpoint 4, which ended up being similar to Shaun’s task at checkpoint 5, although some of the scores did not improve after their practice at checkpoint 4!!
Next to myself at checkpoint 6 although for some reason my task of filling a bucket of water did not go down too well. Perhaps it was the holes in the bucket which did not help!!! Worse was to follow and again looks of you must be kidding came from the kids, when I said they had to transport said bucket full of water to checkpoint 7 where the DC was waiting to see how much water they had managed to get there.  Unfortunately the water was needed for his task and so empty buckets meant no chance of a score at checkpoint 7!! Yes I know I’m an evil sod, but who said scouting was meant to be easy!!!
Back at the 82nd soup and hot dogs were served by Vera, Chris and Sylvia from the SAS and my thanks to them and then we settled don to some kip. Fat chance what with excited scouts and snoring leaders!!!!
Another fantastic effort by both the scouts and leaders. Well done to you all.

Hike2010 marked the third time that Don District had run the 'Fun Night Hike'. This year we were once again blessed with a gorgeous evening which turned into a warmish night. Once again the entries for the event were staggering with 21 teams from the District setting off from Ecclesfield Scout Hut in a staggered start. The aim to visit all 7 checkpoints and make it to the end without getting lost and have a bit of fun along the way.

The previous two years had seen the patrols having to carry and safeguard eggs and balloons on the way, this year the leaders were extremely devious and gave them a small chair to carry around. The first base, run by Andy and Sylvia, had scouts guessing the names of chairs! Obviously they had picked up the theme. The explorers ably manned the next two bases with scouts having to cook eggs and the phonetic alphabet.. Then it was on to Wood End and a checkpoint that involved giant chopstick run by Mike. Up the steep Elliott Lane to the next point where Shaun asked the teams to fill a bucket with balls using ....giant chopsticks. (more communication needed!).

leaky bucketThe 6th checkpoint had Matt making them fill a bucket with water from Charlton Brook. Matt being as devious as ever had provided buckets with small additions.......holes. The water then had to be carried very carefully on the chair, for these were buckets without handles, to the last checkpoint where our DC Steve was waiting for them to use the water carried for their next task. No water, no points!

The finish was at the 82nd headquarters where where Vera, Chris and Sylvia, from our very own SAS, administered hot dogs, soup and drinks to the hoards. The 61st and 105th went on to Hesley to sleep, the 14th back to their own HQ whilst the majority stayed at the 82nd for a nights sleep. They eventually bedded down apart from those kept awake by excited kids or snoring leaders (don't know who they meant Wink )

It was a very close contest as usual with the 32nd B  winning, followed by 1 point by the 82nd C. Third place went to the 82nd B. Full results are available here.

It was a fantastic night for both the scouts and the leaders. Well done to everyone who took part.
